USB 3.0 Released: Faster Transfer Speeds for Portable Storage

The release of the USB 3.0 standard earlier this year means we can now enjoy faster USB transfer speeds for flash drives, external hard drives, Solid State Disks (SSD), and other portable storage.

Current USB 2.0 speeds (most modern computers and portable storage) run at 480 Mbps (megabits per second). USB 3.0 will be as much as 10 times faster!

This means downloading or uploading pictures, video, music and other files in seconds, rather than minutes. It also means running more applications right from your flash drives.

However, the changeover will not be instant. While DIY and high performance computer builders have access to the hardware now, those purchasing average computers from local retail stores will have to wait, perhaps more than a year, before USB 3.0 becomes universal.
