As with the dawn of many new technologies throughout history, the Internet has brought both great possibilities and potential catastrophe.

This has already been demonstrated repeatedly throughout its still short life (15 years for most people). Some of these possibilities which have come to pass include:

• Chatting with thousands of people in forums
• Realtime online video conferencing sessions
• Purchasing almost anything online
• Conducting business exclusively online
• Conducting real transactions in 3D virtual worlds

And last but not least, spreading the worst computer viruses of all time.

As with biological systems, electronic 'viruses' a.k.a. computer 'viruses' are capable of causing widespread havoc in a very short period of time. As of 2010, they have been responsible for a combined total of hundreds of billions of dollars in damage.
